"Love on the Spectrum"
For any fellow binge-watchers out there (a skill I honed during quarantine), there have been lots of opinions shared about the recently released reality show, “Love on the Spectrum”. I watched the series, and have since received lots of questions from friends and family about my thoughts. As someone who works with people with autism around the exact situations portrayed in the show, I’ve contemplated the idea of sharing my thoughts through this blog, but each time I start to write, something feels off. I’ve seen lots of articles and opinion pieces about the show, many of which were written by people who are not on the spectrum. Something about that just doesn’t sit well with me.
So this week, as I’ve done in the past, I’m passing the buck to someone who can speak from direct experience. Michelle Varinata is a 27 year old woman with a big personality, killer fashion sense, and a large instagram following. She also has autism.
“'Love on the Spectrum' recently dropped on Netflix and while not everything on the reality show is in line with my reality, it did lead me to look back on my own dating journey.” Read about her dating experiences as a woman with autism here.
