Recognizing Non-binary People
This week marked the celebration of International Non-Binary People’s Day. This is a term that is used frequently in discussions about gender and sexuality, but we have to recognize the fact that many people still aren’t quite sure what it encompasses. And that’s okay. When it comes to LGBTQ+ culture, there are going to be aspects that some people are unaware of, just as there would be in any marginalized culture. There’s no need to feel shame or guilt if you’re confused about what exactly non-binary is, as long as you’re willing to learn and understand.
In the spirit of staying humble and being open to learning from other’s experiences, I’ll be the first to admit that my understanding of non-binary, as a cisgender woman, is not going to be as accurate as someone’s who identifies as such. Because of that, I’ve decided to share this article written by Niles Clipson, a non-binary person with disabilities. I encourage you to read about their experiences with an open mind, and heart.
